چکیده

The origin of phosphorus metabolism is one of the central problems in the context of the emergence of life on Earth. It has been shown that the C–H–O system can be transformed into a fourcomponent C–H–O–P system with the formation of a gluconeogenesis path in a possible Archean hydrothermal condition under the influence of a phosphorus chemical potential. This system became the energy supply basis for protometabolism, and facilitated the formation of a new CO2 fixation cycle (the reductive pentose phosphate pathway). The modular design of central metabolism in the C–H–O–P system is derived from the parageneses (associations) of certain substances, and the emerging modules in turn associate with each other in certain physical and chemical hydrothermal conditions. The assembly of malate, oxaloacetate, pyruvate, and phosphoenolpyruvate is a reversible "turnstile like" mechanism with a switching of reaction direction that determines the trend of specific metabolic systems development.

Comparative biochemistry of CO2 fixation and the evolution of autotrophy.

Carbon dioxide fixation is a polyphyletic trait that has evolved in widely separated prokaryotic branches. The three principal CO2-assimilation pathways are (i) the reductive pentose-phosphate cycle, i.e. the Calvin-Benson cycle; (ii) the reductive citric acid (or Arnon) cycle; and (iii) the net synthesis of acetyl-CoA from CO/CO2, or Wood pathway. Sequence analysis and the comparative biochemi...

A global two component signal transduction system that integrates the control of photosynthesis, carbon dioxide assimilation, and nitrogen fixation.

Photosynthesis, biological nitrogen fixation, and carbon dioxide assimilation are three fundamental biological processes catalyzed by photosynthetic bacteria. In the present study, it is shown that mutant strains of the nonsulfur purple photosynthetic bacteria Rhodospirillum rubrum and Rhodobacter sphaeroides, containing a blockage in the primary CO2 assimilatory pathway, derepress the synthesi...

Carbon Isotope Fractionation by Autotrophic Bacteria with Three Different C 02 Fixation Pathways

Carbon isotope fractionation during autotrophic growth of different bacteria which possess different autotrophic C 0 2 fixation pathways has been studied. 13C /l2C-Ratios in the cell carbon of the following bacteria were determined ( C 0 2 fixation pathway suggested or proven in paren theses): Alkaligenes eutrophus (reductive pentose phosphate cycle), Desulfobacterium autotrophicum and A cetob...

Salt Requirement for Crassulacean Acid Metabolism in the Annual Succulent, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum.

In experiments with the facultative Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) species, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, only plants which received high levels of inorganic salts fixed substantial amounts of CO(2) by the CAM pathway. Equivalent osmolarities of polyethylene glycol 6000 did not yield any CAM fixation. Plant water potential and turgor pressure had no detectable influence on the amount of CA...

Thermodynamic properties of the Calvin cycle and pentose phosphate pathway

The enzymes of the Calvin cycle and pentose phosphate pathway operate in close conjunction with enzymes of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. The last two metabolic routes are thermodynamically well characterized, but the former two are not. In this work, the thermodynamic properties of the 19 enzymatic reactions of the pentose phosphate pathway and the Calvin cycle, under standard conditions were...
